I was about 18 (that is almost 30 years ago) when I first heard Petra. That first album was Never Say Die. I soon bought More Power To Ya, and the rest, as they say, is history! From then on I bought every Petra album. And, when I say album, I mean vinyl (or tape)! Then came the year 2005, and my musical world was shattered! You see, Petra’s long run from their first album back in 1974 had come to an end with their Farewell tour.
That was a sad time for me. I really enjoyed Petra and their Biblical words written to my favourite style of music: Rock!
Well, the good news is that the old Petra (Bob Hartman – lead guitar & vocals; Louie Weaver – drums; John Lawry – keyboards & vocals; Mark Kelly – bass guitar & vocals; Greg X. Volz – lead vocals) has regrouped under the new name Classic Petra!. Their new album, consisting of re-recorded versions of their old pre-John Schlitt days, is available for download as a pre-release! I have bought it, downloaded it, and love it!
Their ‘exclusive sneak preview digital download’ of the new album had such an amazing response, that it caused the download server to have a hernia! The server had to be revamped to handle the download volumes. All I can say is that I’ve got my copy downloaded and I’m a happy man!
Since Petra’s demise in 2005, I simply couldn’t latch onto any other group or artist of which I could honestly say that I enjoyed all their music. There is only one artist of whom I can say that, and it is Petra.
All that is left to say is: Welcome back, Petra! Welcome back! (even if it is as Classic Petra).
