You know that it is right to stand against racism, don't you? You know that it is right to feed the hungry, don't you? The question is, Why don't you?
You can sit there and think about all the right things to do, but then you also have to ponder why you don't!
James 4:17 tells us:
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. This is serious business. Are you taking this seriously? We all know, or at least should know, that sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, adultery, homosexuality, and the like are sins.
James here flips the coin to the other side. It is not just, "Don't do that!" He also says, "If you don't do this, it is sin!"
(22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. (24) For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (25) But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (26) If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. (27) Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. Be a doer of the word, not just a hearer!
